[JapanUrbanLegend] under a cherry blossom tree

cherry trees

In Japan, there is a custom called hanami, where families and friends gather for picnics under cherry blossom trees during March and April each year. Among the famous spots, there are particularly renowned cherry trees that carry dark and eerie tales.

One of the most popular versions is that beneath the cherry trees lie buried corpses, and the tree absorbs nutrients from these bodies to bloom beautiful flowers. While this may sound absurd, it is a widely circulated urban legend in Japan and has become a subject of morbid jokes. For example, people might say, "If you dig beneath where you are sitting, you'll find a mass of bones."

This superstition arises from the belief that the roots of cherry trees are ideal for corpse decomposition, and the sight of cherry blossoms fluttering evokes a sense of sorrow and melancholy. The red hue of the blossoms can also be interpreted as having absorbed human blood. The tale of a tree blooming beautifully by feeding on corpses often recurs in stories about other flowers, but due to the dramatic contrast between cherry blossoms and corpses, it seems to be more frequently associated with cherry trees.

There is also a story about a famous cherry blossom park in Japan being renovated, during which a mysterious group dressed in black suits was reportedly seen while the cherry trees were being relocated.

This urban legend is frequently used in novels, manga, anime, and games, especially in scenarios where the mood is disrupted during a picnic under cherry trees, making it almost a cliché. It is said to have originated from the short story "Under the Cherry Trees" by Motojirō Kajii, which starts with the line, "Beneath the cherry trees, corpses are buried! This is something to believe." However, in this short story, human corpses do not appear; instead, only the bodies of dragonflies that die after mating are mentioned. While all corpses return to the earth, and the soil becomes nourishment for plants, this story could be said to hold some truth.
