[KoreaUrbanLegend] The Legend of Hoeryong-ri

dragon

In Hoeryong-ri, Baebang-eup, Asan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, there is a legend that has been passed down through generations. This legend is not just a simple story, but one that holds a deep meaning connected to the village, its people, and nature.

The beginning of the legend dates back over 500 years, when a yellow dragon, banished from the heavenly realm for committing a grave mistake, descended to Hoeryongri village in Asan. This dragon, originally a celestial being, had been exiled after making a serious error in the heavens. To atone for his sins, he was given the task of protecting a village on Earth. The dragon arrived in Hoeryongri to fulfill this mission, and his job was to guard the village from calamities for three years, under the strict condition that he must never leave the area during that time.

For those three years, the yellow dragon worked tirelessly to protect the village. When epidemics struck, he fought them off; when droughts came, he caused rain to fall; and when floods ravaged the land, he saved the villagers. Thanks to the dragon's efforts, the people of the village lived in peace without any worries. The dragon was always more diligent and more anxious than the villagers themselves, working harder to keep them safe.

One day, while the dragon was carrying out his duties as usual, heavy rain suddenly began to fall in the evening. During this time, King Sejong, who had been suffering from an eye disease while working on the creation of the Korean alphabet, was traveling to Onyang for healing. On his way, Sejong and his entourage lost their way and found themselves in distress due to the rain. Seeing this, the dragon, feeling pity for the king, transformed into a farmer and guided the royal party safely to Onyang Hot Springs. This act, however, was a violation of his celestial order, as he had been commanded not to leave the place. Consequently, the dragon could no longer return to the temple where he had been guarding and became a dragon-like creature, known as an Imugi, living in the nearby Yonghwa-ri.

Later, upon hearing the dragon’s story, King Sejong ordered the construction of a magnificent temple at the former site of the dragon’s temple. The heavenly realm, moved by the dragon’s repentance, allowed him to return to his original post and protect the village once again. With the dragon’s return, the village became peaceful once more, and the people rejoiced. From then on, the area was called Hoeryongri ("The Village Where the Dragon Returns"), in reference to the dragon’s return to protect the land.

As word of the legend spread, many people began to flock to Onyang Hot Springs for healing, praying to the dragon for recovery. The dragon, in turn, answered their prayers and healed their ailments. After three years, however, the dragon ascended back to the heavens, and from then on, the healing powers ceased. The temple was eventually destroyed in a war, and now only the foundation stones remain as remnants of the old temple.

This legend of Hoeryongri is more than just a story; it reflects the people’s belief, hope, and respect for nature and the heavens. Through this tale, the villagers dreamed of a peaceful life under the protection of the dragon.
