[JapanUrbanLegend] Aokigahara

Aokigahara (青木ヶ原) is a primeval forest area located at the base of Mount Fuji, extending into Fujikawaguchiko Town, Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. It is also known as Aokigahara Jukai (青木ヶ原樹海) or Fuji’s Jukai (富士の樹海), and is often simply referred to as Jukai (樹海). The term “Jukai” originally means "sea of trees," referring to a vast and dense forest, and while it is a general noun in Chinese characters, it has come to specifically denote this region in Japan.

The forest was formed by lava flows from the major eruption of Mount Fuji in 864 AD. The area covers approximately 30 square kilometers, about ten times the size of Yeouido's land area in Seoul. Prior to the eruption, there was a large lake in the area, which was mostly filled by lava, creating Lake Shoji.

Aokigahara is a popular tourist destination with camping grounds and well-maintained walking trails. It is known for its beautiful scenery, including nearby lakes and Mount Fuji, and is easily accessible from Tokyo and the surrounding metropolitan area. However, since the publication of Matsumoto Seicho's novel Tower of Waves (波の塔) in 1960, it has gained a reputation as a suicide hotspot. The number of suicides in the forest has increased over the years, with significant numbers reported in the 1990s and 2000s.

Despite its eerie reputation, many of the myths about Aokigahara are exaggerated. The notion that one cannot find their way out of the forest is not true; Route 139 runs through the forest, and there are established trails. Claims that compasses do not work there are also false. Recent measures, such as increased police patrols and CCTV installations, have significantly reduced the number of incidents.

Thus, while Aokigahara remains a place of natural beauty, it is important to visit with caution and respect due to its complex history and the ongoing efforts to address its challenges.
