[JapanUrbanLegend] finger-cutting town

village

This story revolves around a series of accidents involving bodily injuries and an insurance fraud case that occurred in a small village in Kyushu during the 1950s. Once prosperous due to coal mining, the village faced economic difficulties after the mines closed. One day, a man accidentally severed his toe while working in the fields, leading to a string of similar accidents in the village. Initially, it was just fingers and toes being lost, but the severity escalated to people losing ears and even eyesight. As a result, neighboring villagers began to refer to it as the "cursed village."

An insurance company, puzzled by the frequency of these accidents, launched an investigation and discovered that the villagers had collectively committed insurance fraud. After enjoying a period of financial stability from government support and retirement funds from the mining companies, the villagers, facing economic hardship, resorted to intentionally injuring themselves to claim insurance payouts.

Eventually, the insurance company prepared to sue the villagers, during which a couple from the village revealed their plan to kill their newborn child under the guise of an accident to collect life insurance. They were arrested for infant murder for insurance purposes.

This incident bears similarities to a real-life insurance fraud case that occurred in 1982 in Tagawa-gun, Fukuoka Prefecture. A waterworks official cut off his finger to pay off gambling debts and was arrested for fraudulently claiming insurance money. It was revealed that this fraud was organized, with roles assigned among the perpetrators. Today, the area is working on revitalization efforts, utilizing former mining sites for industrial purposes.
