[JapanUrbanLegend] Kuchisake-onna
The Red Mask or the Slit-Mouthed Woman (Japanese: 口裂け女, くちさけおんな) is a Japanese urban legend that became popular across Japan from spring to summer in 1979. This legend has been periodically revisited in 1993 and 2004, particularly among students. The Red Mask asks, "Am I pretty?" and based on the answer, she kills the person in a terrifying story.
The protagonist of this legend is a young woman wearing a mask that covers her face. She stops children on their way home from school and asks, "Am I pretty? (わたし、きれい?)" If the child answers "Yes, you are pretty (きれい)," she removes her mask and asks, "Am I still pretty? (……これでも……?)" revealing her mouth, which is slit from ear to ear. If the child answers "No, you are not pretty (きれいじゃない)," she kills them on the spot with a sickle, and if they say "Yes, you are pretty," she will slit their mouth open.
There are also variations of the legend that state the way she slits the mouth depends on the blood type: Type A is slit as much as they smile, Type B to the cheeks, Type AB has their facial skin cut, and Type O is slit down to the earlobe.
The woman is said to use various weapons such as long scissors, kitchen knives, sickles, hand axes, hatchets, and scalpels. In urban areas, where there are many people and weapons need to be concealed, she tends to use scissors or sickles, while in rural areas, she prefers more destructive weapons like kitchen knives or hand axes. It is said that she has 130 teeth, making it easy for her to bite and kill children.
The Red Mask is said to be able to run 100 meters in 2 seconds (or 6 seconds) and there are stories of her outrunning police motorcycles. Even while wearing wooden sandals, she can achieve great speed, suggesting her abilities are beyond imagination. She is also said to be over 2 meters tall and generally thin and emaciated.
To avoid being killed in this legend, it is said that one must answer "Normal (ふつう)." Around the year 2000, it was shared that saying "It's just okay (まあまあです)" and running away was a way to escape. There are also methods involving using caramel (べっこう飴) and pomade to flee. Notably, the common theme is that the woman is weak, and throwing or spraying pomade can cause her to panic, providing an opportunity to escape.
There are various theories about the origin of the Red Mask legend. One theory suggests it originated from the image of a mother with a strong educational zeal in Minokamo City, Gifu Prefecture, while another theory posits that a mother near Aichi Prefecture, unable to send her daughter to a cram school due to financial reasons, created a story that evolved and spread nationwide. Additionally, there is an intriguing theory that the CIA spread rumors to verify how rumors propagate.
Thus, the Red Mask transcends being a simple urban legend, reflecting various cultures and psychologies of Japanese society. The reason this legend continues to be discussed today is likely due to its horror and mystery, which stimulate people's curiosity.
