[KoreaUrbanLegend] Jayu-ro Ghost

1. Overview of the Legend

The legend of the Freeway Ghost pertains to a supposed apparition seen on the Freeway connecting Seoul and Paju at night. This apparition is described as a human-like shape, often seen in the middle of the road. Initially, it seems to be a woman wearing sunglasses, but a closer look reveals black voids where the eyes should be. The legend spread widely in the mid-2000s through the internet and was confirmed by celebrities like Park Hee-jin and Tak Jae-hoon, gaining popularity among the general public.

The ghost is often described as having no eyes, and some speculate it could be related to traffic accidents, hidden burial sites, or other traditional ghostly themes. Some even suggest it might be an alien or "Gray". Shaman Kim Se-hwan, who was involved in explaining this ghost, claimed it was a 20-year-old woman who was murdered nearby. However, truck drivers who frequently travel the Freeway report never having seen the ghost and attribute the tales to the area's hazardous driving conditions.

2. Characteristics and Background

The Freeway is known for frequent fog, leading to a high incidence of accidents. The Ilsan area sees heavy traffic, and the Munbal area is particularly dangerous at night. After passing the Heyri Seongdong IC, the road becomes very dark with minimal street lighting, contributing to the eerie atmosphere.

The Freeway is also a military operational zone, contributing to its dark and ominous appearance at night. Despite the opening of the Pyeongtaek-Paju Expressway in 2020, the conditions on the Freeway remain largely unchanged. The area towards the Imjingak is particularly narrow and poorly lit, increasing the risk of animal crossings and accidents.

3. Analysis and Interpretation

Various interpretations of the Freeway Ghost legend exist. One theory suggests that the ghost may be a woman who, after a fight with her boyfriend or husband, was seen hitchhiking with smeared makeup, which could have been mistaken for a ghost. The rise of taxi apps has been suggested as a reason why such ghost sightings have decreased.

There was also speculation that Kim Tae-won, who lived in Ilsan and was known for taking night walks and wearing large sunglasses, might be mistaken for the ghost. Since Kim Tae-won moved away, sightings of the ghost have reportedly decreased, although the Freeway itself is a road where walking is not allowed.

Lastly, there was an actual case of a woman who died in a hit-and-run accident, which was linked to the ghost legend. The perpetrator was apprehended, and the investigation into the incident suggested a possible connection to the ghost stories.
