[WorldUrbanLegend] Mercy Brown vampire incident

Mercy Brown vampire incident

The Mercy Brown vampire incident occurred in 1892 in Rhode Island, USA. It is one of the most well-documented cases of exhuming bodies to perform rituals aimed at chasing away undead beings. This incident was part of the New England vampire panic.

The Brown family, including George and Mary, experienced multiple cases of tuberculosis (then called "consumption") in the late 19th century. At that time, tuberculosis was a destructive and frightening disease. The mother, Mary Eliza, was the first to die from this illness, followed by their eldest daughter, Mary Olive, in 1884. In 1891, daughter Mercy and son Edwin contracted the disease. Friends and neighbors believed that one of the deceased family members was a vampire and thought this was causing Edwin's illness. This belief aligned with the folk superstitions of the time, linking multiple deaths in a family to undead activities. Tuberculosis was poorly understood at the time and was a topic of many superstitions.

George Brown agreed to exhume the bodies of several family members. On March 17, 1892, townspeople, local doctors, and newspaper reporters dug up the bodies. The bodies of Mary and Mary Olive showed the expected level of decomposition, so they were not considered the cause. However, Mercy's body showed little decomposition and still had blood in the heart. This was taken as a sign that the young woman was undead and the cause of Edwin's illness. The lack of decomposition in Mercy’s body was likely due to her being kept in a frozen-like state in the underground grave for two months after her death.
According to superstition, Mercy's heart and liver were burned, and the ashes were mixed with water to be given to Edwin as a remedy. However, Edwin died two months later. Mercy's remaining body was buried, mutilated, in the Baptist cemetery in Exeter.

Ultimately, George Brown lived until 1922, one of the few who did not contract tuberculosis, witnessing the discovery of the BCG vaccine for tuberculosis by Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin.
