[WorldUrbanLegend] Ripley syndrome

Ripley syndrome

The term "Ripley Syndrome" is not officially recognized as a mental disorder. According to an article from Money Today, Professor Han Chang-su from Korea University Ansan Hospital stated that "for a condition to be considered a mental illness, it must cause dysfunction in social, occupational, or family settings." There are no classifications of Ripley Syndrome in the DSM or WHO disease codes.

The term originates from Patricia Highsmith's novel *The Talented Mr. Ripley*, which became popular upon its release in 1955. The character Tom Ripley gained further fame through the 1960 film *Purple Noon*. However, the concept of "Ripley Syndrome" became widely discussed only after the 1999 film *Ripley*, which portrayed Tom as a complex character involved in murder and deceit.

Despite its popular use, the term is often misunderstood and misapplied by the media, especially when discussing cases of deceit or fraud, erroneously linking them to the film.

The reason Ripley Syndrome may be considered a kind of urban legend is that it is difficult to distinguish between someone who lies while knowing the truth and someone who believes their own lies. This distinction is crucial because delusional disorders involve a complete lack of insight into false beliefs.

Ultimately, "Ripley Syndrome" is an informal term with no clinical basis. The media's portrayal of it as a genuine mental disorder is misleading. While some doctors may use the term for better public understanding, it is not an official diagnosis.
