[WorldCase] Max Headroom signal hijacking

On the evening of November 22, 1987, as the skies of Chicago darkened and the night descended, people were going about their usual routines. However, that night, they were about to be shaken by an event no one could have foreseen. Twice, an unknown figure hijacked the airwaves of two broadcast stations, leaving behind a mystery that remains unsolved to this day.

The first incident occurred around 9 PM during WGN-TV's sports news broadcast. As anchor Dan Roan was presenting the sports updates, suddenly, the screen flickered, and an eerie figure appeared. This figure wore a "Max Headroom" mask and stood before a strange, unsettling background. For about 25 seconds, the figure spoke incoherently, making nonsensical statements, and performing bizarre actions. His speech was unclear, and the audio was garbled, making it difficult to comprehend. After about 20 seconds, the engineers quickly cut the broadcast. The anchor, visibly puzzled, remarked, "I don’t know what happened either."

But the story didn’t end there. Just two hours later, another broadcast hijacking occurred. This time, it was on WTTW during a rerun of the "Doctor Who" episode "Horror of Fang Rock." Again, the same eerie figure wearing the Max Headroom mask took over the screen, this time delivering even more incomprehensible ramblings, interspersed with unsettling laughter. This time, both video and audio were transmitted clearly, and the bizarre actions were visible in full. It was as though a strange and terrifying event from another dimension had bled into the real world. "Do you like it?" the figure muttered, offering no explanation for the madness unfolding on screen.

The most puzzling aspect of this case was the source of the broadcast hijacking. The signals were traced back to the Willis Tower in Chicago, a massive transmission tower. From there, the signal was sent out, disrupting the normal broadcasts. But the identity of the hijacker(s) remained a mystery. Who were they, and what was their purpose?

Some speculated that the event might have been the work of disgruntled former employees of the broadcast stations, seeking revenge in an elaborate prank. Given their intimate knowledge of the station's systems, they could have easily covered their tracks. However, even this theory failed to explain why the hijacking had been carried out in such a bizarre and unsettling manner.

In 2010, a Reddit user made a claim that sent shockwaves through the community: "The person on screen was a 10-year-old boy from Chicago with autism!" However, this claim was retracted in 2015, and the case remained as baffling as ever.

Years later, the strange event still looms large in the minds of many. Was it simply a bizarre prank meant to spark curiosity? Or was there a deeper, more sinister reason behind it? The answers remain elusive, and the masked figure, who vanished without a trace, is still the subject of endless speculation.
